Lost, Stolen or Expired Public Services Card

If your Public Services Card is lost, stolen or damaged, call the PSC helpdesk on 0818 837000 straight away. An expiring card can be renewed online with a verified MyGovID and a new photo; name changes need a visit to a PSC centre.

The Department asks you to contact the helpdesk immediately. Your PPS number does not change; only the card is replaced.

Renewing an expired or expiring card

The expiry date is printed on the front of the card. To renew online you need a verified MyGovID account:

  1. Go to MyWelfare.ie and find the Public Services Card renewal service.
  2. Sign in with your verified MyGovID.
  3. Review and confirm your personal details and address.
  4. Upload a recent digital photo that meets the requirements.

Once the renewal with the new photo is approved, you can keep using online services that rely on your PSC. If you cannot renew online, go to a PSC centre, where the photo is taken for you.

Photo older than 10 years? Some services check the age of your PSC photo. The NDLS, for example, will not let you apply online for a licence until your PSC photo is under 10 years old. Renewing the PSC fixes this.

Changing your name on the card

You must attend a PSC centre in person, because a new signature is recorded. Bring your current PSC and evidence of your new name:

ReasonEvidence
Marriage or civil partnershipPhoto ID in your pre-marriage name (PSC, passport or driving licence) and your marriage or civil partnership certificate
Going back to your pre-marriage nameJust your current PSC. No evidence of use is needed.
Deed pollA certified copy of your signed deed poll registered with the Irish High Court
Use and reputeAt least 2 documents going back at least 2 years: letters from a government department, educational certificate, bank statement or card, utility bill, or student or employee ID
