Quick answer: 3 questions
- Did you lose your job completely, with your last day on or after 28 March 2025? If yes and you have at least 104 PRSI contributions, go to Pay-Related Benefit. Apply within 6 weeks.
- Are you working part of the week (part-time, casual, short-time, seasonal, school-year jobs, retained firefighter)? That is Jobseeker's Benefit.
- Not enough PRSI, benefit used up, or self-employed with low income? That is Jobseeker's Allowance, which looks at your household means.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Jobseeker's Allowance and Jobseeker's Benefit?
Jobseeker's Allowance is means-tested: it depends on your household income and savings. Jobseeker's Benefit (and the newer Pay-Related Benefit) depends on your PRSI contributions, not your means.
I lost my job. Do I apply for Jobseeker's Benefit or Pay-Related Benefit?
If you are fully unemployed and your last day of work was on or after Friday 28 March 2025, it is Jobseeker's Pay-Related Benefit. Jobseeker's Benefit is now for part-time, casual, short-time and seasonal workers.
Can I choose Jobseeker's Allowance instead of the Benefit?
Yes. If you qualify for a benefit you can still choose optional Jobseeker's Allowance if it would pay you more.
Do I need to verify my identity first?
Yes. All three payments require your identity to be verified to SAFE Level 2 before anything can be paid, for online and paper claims.
